Scientific Name: Atrophaneura horishana
This is a beautiful endemic species that inhabits only the high altitudes of Taiwan, between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. It is a rare butterfly, characterized by the red coloration on its hindwings, lacking tail-like projections, and seen from June to November. It is also known as a natural monument with restricted collection. Characteristics and Ecology: The wings are black (females have a grayish tinge), and the outer edge of the underside of the hindwings is covered in a vivid red.
Size: A large butterfly, with forewing lengths reaching approximately 62mm for males and 70mm for females. Habitat: Distributed in the mid-to-high altitudes (alpine zone) of Taiwan, it flies gently within forests.
Host Plant: Aristolochia shimadai. Conservation Status: Designated as a natural monument in Taiwan and is protected. Due to its beauty, it is highly popular in specimen and photographic collections as Taiwan's representative beautiful species.
