?? This is a bare-root seedling of Getto (Shell Ginger).
The leaves have been cut off.
As a rhizomatous plant, it will sprout and multiply rapidly during this season when new shoots emerge.
Planting it now, as the rainy season begins, should help it establish roots well.

Water thoroughly when the surface of the soil dries out. It can be grown outdoors in warm regions, but in colder areas (Kanto region and north), it's best to grow it in a pot and manage it indoors during winter.

The leaves have deodorizing, sterilizing, and insect-repelling properties. It can also be planted in your garden as a windbreak.
On this island, we sometimes use the leaves to wrap and steam mochi, or as a garnish for dishes. It can also be dried to make tea, but please search online for instructions on how to do so.
