Citizen PARAWATER Date Star Hand-Wound Vintage

This is a Para Water Date Star 17 jewel model from the late 1960s to early 1970s.
Para Water was the name of Citizen's first series of truly waterproof watches made in Japan. Para is a prefix meaning to prevent or to protect, and Water means water. Combining these two, the name was chosen with the image of a watch that protects from water.

Historical Significance

Citizen showcased the technological prowess of Japanese watches at the time with series like Parashock with shock-resistant mechanisms and Para Water waterproof watches. Para Water was widely used as a practical watch emphasizing everyday water resistance and is considered to have set the standard for subsequent Japanese waterproof watches.

Case Structure Features

Many Para Water watches featured a dedicated case structure to enhance water resistance, such as reinforced gaskets on the case back and crown, and were advertised as fully waterproof cases. Consequently, the Para Water case was sometimes adopted for Citizen's high-end slim models and automatic watches of the era, leaving a strong impression of waterproof = Para Water.
