Kimekomi Doll
Mataro Doll
Traditional Craft
[Creator]
This is a work by an 80-year-old artisan holding a master's license.
They have loved Kimekomi Dolls and have continued to create many dolls over the years.
They are still actively creating them today.
These are heartfelt handmade creations.
[What is a Kimekomi Doll?]
Grooves are carved into a prototype made of paulownia paste.
The edges of the fabric are then pushed into these grooves with a needle or similar tool,
creating the appearance of the doll wearing clothing.
The origin of Kimekomi Dolls dates back to around 1740, when a craftsman created them for a sacred offering box at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto.
It is a traditional doll with a history of nearly 300 years.
