[Ikuo Hirayama] 1930-2009
A Japanese-style painter and educator. He served as Chairman of the Japan Art Institute, Director of the Hitotsubashi Comprehensive Foundation, and the 6th and 8th President of Tokyo University of the Arts. He was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit. He holds honorary titles such as Honorary Citizen of Hiroshima Prefecture, Honorary Citizen of Hiroshima City, and Honorary Citizen of Kamakura City. His son is Ren Hirayama, an evolutionary biologist (Professor at Waseda University) known for his research on turtles. His wife is Michiko Hirayama (Director of the Hirayama Ikuo Silk Road Museum).
